The Fiio E5 headphone amplifier is EXTREMELY portable. It's not that much bigger than the old iPod shuffle. Considering that nearly all portable amps have a basic footprint at least the size of a deck of cards, this is astonishing.
3.5 mm audio jack, digital volume control, power button, and "bass" slider switch on the E5.Do you see that mini USB port? Hmm, what could that be you may ask. The E5 has an internal rechargeable lithium ion battery, which can run up to 20 hours. Not bad at all. The other side has a little "bass boost" switch to target just the low end without distortion, and it's decent if you are using a line out with flat eq. There's also a digital volume control switch, previously FiiO model amps were missing this volume control.
So, native Chinese companies have been making a splash in the audio community. Yuin has garnered a positive reputation, albeit they have some quality control problems. FiiO is also making waves, it is based out of Guangzhou, Guandong China.
FiiO initially introduced the ultra portable E3. Skeptics wary of Chinese quality were won over by hearty performance. The E3 did have shortcomings though: it lacked volume controls, and had some noise/distortion issues. I will not consider the lack of a rechargeable battery a real weakness because at the time, the size was still manageable. The E5 cut down the size with the lithiun ion rechargeable battery, improve signal noise reduction, and increased the output power.
Many of my friends have larger headphones which they feel don't get loud enough, the problem is high driver impedance which an ipod or pc can't match. This leaves sound flat and lifeless. Hook up this small amp, and the bass will come back strong, and the sound-stage will open up.
Fortunately, an amp helps even with headphones that sound okay normally. I used the E5's with my Sennheiser PX100's, it cleaned up the bass and gave more depth to my music.
The BEST part of all this is the price. The E5s can be purchased for under $20 on Ebay, this is a steal. A lot of cans will benefit from this amp, unless you are running fairly expensive equipment this solution is good enough for portable and casual home use.
